Overall Grand Prize and Gold Winner: Birds in the Environment

BLOCKED
Alejandro Prieto, Mexico
The US-Mexico border, 3,000 km long, crosses and straddles some of the most biologically diverse regions of the continent. It is home to mammals, reptiles, birds and plants with unique adaptations, some of which are found nowhere else on the planet. Many species are affected by the border wall. Border infrastructure not only physically blocks the movement of wildlife, it also destroys and fragments habitats. Many desert animals are, to some extent, nomadic wanderers and a wall breaks habitat connectivity and prevents them from moving freely from place to place. In this photograph, a Greater Roadrunner approaches the border wall in Naco, Arizona with what almost looks like a sense of bewilderment.
